I need to drill a few bolts for safety wiring on my motorcycle. Already have the basics done through pre-drilled bolts, just need to do a few smaller ones where pre-drilled was not available, or I need to use as anchors. Does anybody have a good guide, or best practices?

I’d prefer to avoid drilling through one of my appendages or setting myself on fire in the process.

A drill press is really handy for stuff like this.

or at least a well anchored vice grip!

Exactly. I have a tiny little workspace in my basement but have a drill press taking up like 1/4 of my entire workbench. It’s invaluable.

CO2 laser. Failing that, some suitably pretentiously coated bits, and a drill press with a vise.

In SAE baja we used a drill press, good bits, and lots and lots of patience.

or a jig and a drill press. The jig is about $25 on Amazon.

a drill press is handy for so many many projects. after getting some hand tools, a decent work bench and vise, I’d say a drill press should be a home handyman’s next priority.

High speed, very light pressure, cutting fluid, the hardest (and shortest) drill bits you can afford (cobalt steel or carbide if you’re rich), extra bits, and a heaping dose of patience is my go to for machining any hardened steels.

what Sovande said... these are pretty common general aviation bolts, you can just buy them predrilled in about any size you need
